Carried by Jeep, sales by FCA US rose 11 percent in May to 214,294 vehicles. Three recently redesigned Jeep models — the Wrangler, Cherokee and Compass — powered the company to its best May showing since 2004.
Overall Jeep sales were up 29 percent to 97,287 vehicles, making it the best May in the brand’s history. Dodge and Ram notched small gains of 3.7 percent and 1.6 percent, but Fiat dropped 46 percent and Chrysler declined 18 percent. Sales by Alfa Romeo, while still small, were well ahead of the year-ago figure at 2,377.
Overall, FCA’s May looks good, but drilling down into the details reveals some potential concerns. FCA has more old vehicles than new, and sales of most of those are falling dramatically. Huge gains from a few new superstars such as the Jeep Wrangler, Compass and Cherokee and the Ram pickup were responsible for FCA’s strong May showing. The Wrangler, for example, set a May sales record, but the entire Fiat brand collapsed, with sales off 46 percent from a year ago. Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio crossover may be finding an audience; sales totaled 1,183 units in May.
