JOBLIFT ANALYSES THE DEMAND FOR PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES IN JOB VACANCIES OVER THE LAST 24 MONTHS
London, 27th July 2018 – The importance of teaching children coding and programming has been catapulted into the spotlight in recent times. Toys, including Harry Potter wands and Robotics Engineer Barbie, are aiming to prepare young people for a new type of workplace and workforce. Job search platform Joblift found that these skills are becoming increasingly crucial in the world of work, with 7% of all job vacancies in the last 12 months requesting programming expertise.

According to Joblift, 7% of the 9,674,785 job advertisements posted in the United Kingdom in the last 12 months, specifically asked for candidates with experience with programming languages (716,631 vacancies). These vacancies increased by an average of 4% each month, double the rate of the UK’s job market as a whole. Of these programming job vacancies, 76,538 requested potential employees to hold at least five years of experience. While programmers in general earn, on average, around £42,000, 33% – of the 292,508 vacancies which stated a salary – advertised an annual wage of at least £50,000.
PYTHON SHOWS THE HIGHEST INCREASE IN MENTIONS WHILE MATLAB’S INCREASE STAGNATES
In terms of potential contenders to the most popular programming language crown; job vacancies requesting candidates with Python skills have increased by an average of 9% each month in the last year – the highest rate of any language analysed. PowerShell and Scala, follow Python, both increasing by an average of 6% each month. With a 5% average monthly increase, vacancies scouting potential employees with PHP and C++ skills rank round up the top five. On the other hand, with less than 1% average monthly increase, MATLAB was the least requested programming language, closely followed by Visual Basic (1% monthly increase). Groovy, Perl, and Objective-C all increased by an average of 3% each month, just under the 4% average increase in programming language jobs in general.
